A little preparation.
A better conversation.

Practical reading to help you think through the background, priorities and questions around a matter.

Preparation

Before the first conversation.

Start with a brief timeline. Note what happened, when it happened and who was involved. Separate the facts you know from the points that still need to be clarified.

Then write down the questions you want to discuss and the outcome you hope to achieve. If there is an important date or deadline, put it near the beginning of your message. Keep detailed or sensitive documents for an agreed channel.

Commercial perspective

The business behind the issue.

A commercial matter may involve timing, cost, relationships and reputation as well as the terms of an agreement. Identifying those priorities can make the first discussion more focused.

Explain the parties involved, the relevant agreement or transaction, and what a useful outcome would look like. A clear commercial objective provides context for considering the next step.

International matters

When a matter crosses borders.

A person may live in one country, own assets in another or have a business relationship that connects several places. Record those connections clearly when outlining the matter.

Include relevant dates, locations and your preferred contact details. This helps the conversation begin with a shared understanding of the circumstances.
